Floor Coating Questions Homeowners Ask

Questions

Questions and answers

Can I coat my garage floor myself?

A DIY kit can work on a sound, dry slab, but it has limits. Grinding, crack repair, and moisture checks take skill and tools. Thin store-bought coats often peel under hot tires. Many homeowners compare a kit price with a provider's written estimate before they decide. Epoxy garage floors last longer when the prep is done right.

How long does a floor coating job take, and will it disrupt my household?

Most garage jobs take a few days, since the slab needs prep, coating, and curing time. Basements and larger floors can take longer. Providers in our network can often plan around school runs and work hours. Ask for a written schedule, and ask when you can walk on the floor and park again.

What should I expect when the provider arrives?

Expect the provider to ask you to clear the space, then grind the concrete and fill cracks. Coating follows, sometimes in layers. There may be a strong smell, so ventilation matters. Ask what to do with pets, cars, and kids while the floor cures.

How do I compare estimates from different providers?

Line them up side by side. Check the prep method, the coating type, the number of coats, and the warranty terms in writing. A very short price may skip grinding. Ask each provider the same questions, take your time, and pick what makes sense for your home.

How much does concrete coating cost?

Typical U.S. prices run from about $3 to $12 per square foot, depending on the coating, prep, and floor condition. Cracks, old sealers, and moisture add work. Prices vary by job, so get a written quote before you agree to anything.

Is epoxy or polyaspartic a better fit for my garage?

Epoxy is common and gives a thick, glossy finish. Polyaspartic cures faster and handles sun and temperature swings well. Many floors use both, with custom floor finishes like color flakes on top. The right pick depends on your slab, budget, and how you use the space. Ask providers to explain their choice.

Do providers in your network handle hardwood flooring installation?

Not usually. Hardwood flooring installation is a different trade. Providers in our network focus on concrete coating for garages, basements, and similar slabs. Tell us what you need in the request form, and we can see if there is a fit.

Can I coat a basement floor if I have a sump pump or spring flooding?

Often yes, but moisture comes first. Full basements with sump pumps and spring flooding can send damp air or water through the slab. A provider may test moisture before coating. Some floors need a vapor barrier coat or a different plan. Ask what the test showed and how the coating handles damp conditions. If water keeps getting in, fix that problem first.
